VLAANDEREN SLUIT ZWEEDSE GRAND PRIX OP STERKE WIJZE AF
Na zijn podiumplaats in de Grand Prix van Lommel reisden Calvin Vlaanderen en Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha Racing af naar Uddevalla in Zweden voor de vijftiende wedstrijd van het wereldkampioenschap MXGP. De baanomstandigheden waren hier compleet anders dan in Lommel met hier een harde en gladde ondergrond. Het was heel moeilijk om in te halen waardoor een goede start van cruciaal belang was. Vlaanderen reed een sterke kwalificatieheat en verzekerde zich met een derde plaats van een goede startplaats voor in de manches op zondag.
Belust op revanche ging hij in de tweede manche van start. Ditmaal pakte hij een betere start en kwam op een derde plaats uit de eerste bocht. Nadat hij in de eerste ronde een aantal posities prijs had moeten geven, reed hij lang op een zesde plaats. Nadat hij in de vijftiende ronde werd gepasseerd door Jorge Prado wist hij de manche als zevende af te sluiten.
Het team zal nu door reizen naar Finland waar aankomend weekend de zestiende ronde van het wereldkampioenschap verreden wordt in Hyvinkaa.
Commentaar Calvin Vlaanderen (15e in het dagklassement): “Al met al ben ik best tevreden over het weekend. Ik heb een aantal goede dingen laten zien. Op zaterdag had ik een goed gevoel met een tweede tijd in de tijdtraining en een derde plaats in de kwalificatieheat. Ik voelde iets meer druk om te presteren in de manches op zondag. In de eerste manche pakte ik een hele slechte start en was ik in de eerste tien minuten te afwachtend. Ik vond mijn ritme en begon plaatsen winst te boeken totdat ik ten val kwam. Helaas wilde de motor daarna niet meer starten waardoor ik de wedstrijd moest verlaten. In de tweede manche pakte ik een goede start en was ik derde. Een aantal rijders passeerden mij in de eerste ronde maar daarna reed ik lang op een zesde plaats. Het was moeilijk om in te halen omdat iedereen bijna hetzelfde deed. Ik finishte als zevende waardoor het een goed weekend was. We nemen het positieve mee en gaan verder in Finland.”

VLAANDEREN ENDS SWEDISH GRAND PRIX ON A HIGH
The Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha team travelled to Lommel in Belgium for what is renowned as the toughest GP on the calendar, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a track the GP riders know well as many practice at the circuit but the organisers totally changed the track which made it unrecognisable. As usual the track formed big bumps and holes all over the track making it very demanding.
After his podium at the Belgian GP at the brutal track of Lommel, Calvin Vlaanderen and the Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha team travelled to Sweden in good spirits for round fifteen of the MXGP World Championship. Track conditions were completely different from Lommel as Uddevalla presented a slick and tricky circuit for the best riders in the world. It was very difficult to make passes which meant good starts were vital.
After a very strong qualifying race, Vlaanderen finished an impressive third to secure a good gate pick for the main races. In the first moto unfortunately, it was bad start which meant the Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha rider had to try and pass plenty of riders. After working his way into the top fifteen unfortunately a small crash occurred and then the bike wouldn’t restart which forced him to retire.
Determined to turn things around in the second moto, Vlaanderen took a good start coming out in third after losing some spots on the opening lap was riding strong in sixth. After being passed by Prado on lap fifteen, Vlaanderen came home in a solid seventh which is good progress for the hard pack and slick conditions.
The team will now get ready for round sixteen of the MXGP World Championship which heads to Finland this weekend.
Calvin Vlaanderen (15th overall): Overall I am quite happy with the weekend. I showed some good things, on Saturday I had a good feeling with second in timed practice and third in the qualifying race. I felt I had a little bit more stress on Sunday to perform in the races. The first race I had a terrible start and was too patient the first ten minutes. I finally found my flow and was coming through the pack but then had a small crash. Unfortunately, the bike didn’t start after that, so I had to call it in that one. In the second moto, I had a good start in third, but a few guys passed me on the first lap. I was riding sixth the whole race, but it was tough to make passes, and everyone was kind of doing the same thing. I ended up seventh so overall it was a good weekend, and we will take the positives and move onto the next one.
