Nadat het seizoen van start was gegaan in Engeland vielen de ogen al snel op de tweede wedstrijd in het Italiaanse Mantova. In de laatste paar jaren hebben de MXGP-rijders hier veel wedstrijden gereden waardoor ze de baan goed kennen. Ondanks dit was de baan harder dan normaal het geval is want vanwege het droge weer was de baan veel minder zacht en zanderig. Ook was dit een totaal ander circuit dan tijdens de eerste wedstrijd in Matterley Basin.
Het weekend begon positief voor Arminas Jasikonis, die hier in Mantova terugkeerde naar de baan waarop hij in 2020 zwaar ten val is gekomen. Gelukkig heeft hij dit goed verwerkt en achter hem gelaten. De crosser uit Litouwen maakte indruk in de kwalificatieheat door als negende te finishen. Calvin Vlaanderen kende tegenslag want hij kwam bij de start met een andere rijder in aanraking en viel. Hij verdween uit de wedstrijd en dit betekende dat hij in beide manches op zondag als laatste een plaats moest zoeken achter het starthek.
In de eerste manche zat Vlaanderen er niet goed bij met de start omdat zijn startplaats aan de buitenzijde verre van ideaal was. Gedurende de wedstrijd vocht hij zich vanaf een achttiende plaats terug naar een elfde plaats. Helaas moest hij in de slotfase nog een plaats afstaan waardoor hij als twaalfde over de finish kwam. Jasikonis kwam in de top tien uit de start maar kwam in de wave sectie ongelukkig ten val en besloot om de wedstrijd te verlaten en zich te concentreren op de tweede manche.
In de tweede manche pakte Vlaanderen een soortgelijke start en kwam op een zeventiende plaats uit de eerste ronde. In de vierde ronde sloeg een valpartij hem terug naar een vierentwintigste plaats maar hij herstelde zich goed en knokte zich in het resterende deel van de wedstrijd nog terug naar een zeventiende plaats. Dit was niet het resultaat waar hij op voorhand voor ging maar hij heeft de snelheid om in de komende wedstrijden in de top tien mee te gaan strijden. Arminas Jasikonis kwam bij de start ten val en moest vanaf een laatste plaats terug naar voren zien te komen. Hij knokte voor wat hij waard was en pakte met een negentiende plaats nog twee punten.
Het team heeft nu een aantal vrije weekenden en zal zich nu gaan voorbereiden op de vierde wedstrijd van het wereldkampioenschap MXGP in het Portugese Agueda. Het team heeft besloten om de lange en dure reis naar Argentinië niet te maken en zal veel tijd gaan doorbrengen op de trainingscircuits om tijdens de rest van het kampioenschap sterk voor de dag te kunnen komen.
Commentaar Calvin Vlaanderen (13e in het dagklassement): ‘’Ik voelde me best goed op de motor en met de baan op zaterdag. Helaas heb ik het mijzelf moeilijk gemaakt door een valpartij in de kwalificatieheat waardoor ik in beide manches als laatste op kon rijden naar het starthek. Ook had mijn schouder een flinke klap gehad bij de valpartij maar door het goed in te tapen viel het op zondag best mee. Ik heb bij de start gedaan wat ik kon en het was een uitdaging om terug naar voren te komen. Ik kwam in de eerste manche terug naar een elfde plaats maar had het in de laatste paar ronden moeilijk en verloor toen nog een plaats. Ook in de tweede manche kwam ik door het veld naar voren maar helaas viel ik toen en verloor veel plaatsen. Ik moest al het werk opnieuw doen om naar voren te komen. We gaan ons de komende weken concentreren om de motor en onszelf beter te maken. Hopelijk ben ik in Portugal weer zoals ik moet zijn.
Commentaar Arminas Jasikonis (22ste in het dagklassement): ‘’Op zaterdag begon ik gedurende de dag steeds beter te rijden en wist mij als negende te kwalificeren en daardoor keek ik positief uit naar de zondag. In de eerste manche zat ik in de top tien na de start maar kwam toen in de tweede ronde op de waves ten val. Ik besloot om de wedstrijd niet uit te rijden en mijn heup die ik had bezeerd wat extra rust te geven voor de tweede manche. De tweede manche begon opnieuw met een valpartij in de eerste ronde en vanaf dat moment heb ik geprobeerd om er nog het beste van te maken. Het weekend is niet afgesloten zoals ik had gehoopt maar ik zie het als een leerdag. Uiteraard zijn er positieve punten om mee te nemen. Nu gaan we ons een aantal weken prepareren voor de volgende Grand Prix zodat we daar goed voor de dag kunnen komen.’’

Attentions quickly turned to the second round of the MXGP World Championship after the season opener in the UK. Italian track, Mantova hosted round two – a track the MXGP riders know very well as they’ve raced a lot there in the past couple of years. However, the track was different and more hard pack than usual as the dry weather meant the terrain wasn’t as soft and sandy. The track offered a very different challenge from the Matterley Basin circuit that hosted round one.
The weekend started really well for Arminas Jasikonis who was back at a track that saw him have his serious incident in 2020 but he’s put that well and truly behind him. The Lithuanian impressed in the qualifying race to finish in ninth. Things didn’t go as well for Calvin Vlaandern after a crash and getting tangled up with other riders saw him DNF the race meaning he had the last gate pick for the main races which is far from ideal.
In the opening race, as expected Vlaanderen didn’t get a good start because of his bad gate pick but he sliced his way through the field. Coming from eighteenth all the way to eleventh the pace was good until he lost a position towards the end of the race but twelfth was a good recovery ride. Jasikonis got a top ten start but unfortunately took a crash and decided to retire from the race to focus on the second moto.
Similar to the first moto, Vlaanderen was seventeenth after the first lap but crashed on the fourth lap which demoted him to twenty-fourth – after that he rode well to get back up to seventeenth, it might not be the results he wants but he certainly has the speed to mix it in the top ten. There was carnage around the first corner which saw Jasikonis go down and have to restart in last position, but he was able to come back to a point scoring position to finish nineteenth.
The team will now a few weekends off and come back ready for round four of the series in Portugal – the team have decided against making the long and expensive trip to Argentina and will instead put the time in at the practice tracks to improve for the rest of the championship.
Calvin Vlaanderen (13th overall): I was feeling quite good with the track and bike on Saturday. But I made it difficult for myself with having last gate pick for Sunday’s races after a hard crash in the qualifying race. I banged up my shoulder, but I got it strapped up and it was okay for Sunday. I did what I could off the start, but it was a challenge to fight through the pack, I got up to eleventh in the first race when I struggled the last couple laps and finished twelfth. Second race I was coming through the pack again when I crashed and lost many places so had to do all the work again to pass the other riders. We will take the next couple weeks to improve on the bike and with myself. Hopefully in Portugal I can be back to my normal self.
Arminas Jasikonis (22nd overall): On Saturday I started with progressing throughout the day and got nineth for Sunday’s gate pick and I was really looking positive for today, but yeah… In the first moto, I took a good start in the top ten but on the second lap crashed which made things go more difficult. I decided not to finish the first moto to give a little extra time to get some rest for the hip I hit. The second moto again started with a first lap crash and then I just tried to ride as good as I can. The weekend for sure was not what I would like to have, but I take it as learning day. For sure there are some positives to take. Now we are just going to have some good weeks of preparations and try to restart and be more on it!
The team now head to Italy for the second round of the MXGP World Championship taking place at Mantova this weekend.
Calvin Vlaanderen (11th overall): The first GP is in the books and it was definitely a challenging weekend for me. I struggled a lot with arm pump the whole weekend so some of the races I was just in survival mode, not really attacking the track and racing like I know how. It was not the results I wanted to go 12-11 at the first GP. My goal was to be inside the top eight in both races but during the second race I started to ride more lose and felt more like myself again. I will try to take that momentum into next week – I know what I need to work on so let’s try to improve for Mantova next weekend.
Arminas Jasikonis (22nd overall): The weekend was filed with bad luck. Every session I had something going on but anyways I am still happy and healthy. Those little things we can fix and riding wise I haven’t had enough time. I still need to improve my riding but it’s difficult when we have some little issues because then we can’t have productive riding, but I am happy and really motivated for Mantova. I am sure it will be much different and a different result but at the moment we don’t look to much at the results, we just try to get race time in, and everything will then be good.
