Thomas Covington stopt met actieve motorcross carriere
Het Gebben van Venrooy Racing team heeft dit jaar enthousiast samengewerkt met Thomas Covington. De Amerikaan maakte dit jaar deel uit van de MXGP line up van het team, dat bestond uit drie rijders.
Na een moeilijke start van het seizoen heeft Covington bekend gemaakt dat hij met onmiddellijke ingang zal stoppen met zijn actieve motorcross carriere. Het team heeft ingestemd met deze wens en beide partijen zijn op een goede manier uit elkaar gegaan. Het volledige Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha Racing team wenst Thomas veel succes toe voor de toekomst.
Thomas Covington: ‘’Ik heb besloten dat het tijd is voor iets nieuws. Om te stoppen met motorcrossen, is één van de moeilijkste beslissingen die ik ooit in mijn leven heb gemaakt. Ik heb in de afgelopen 20 jaar niets anders gedaan dan dit. Op de manier waarop alles de laatste tijd ging, wilde ik de risico’s niet nemen die ik normaal wel zou hebben genomen. Ik heb hard getraind en heel veel getest om voor het tweede deel van het seizoen goed voorbereid aan de start te komen. Ik wilde alles geven en geloofde echt in mijzelf. Echter wanneer ik achter het starthek stond, kon ik mijzelf niet dwingen om het gas open te houden, wat wel nodig is in de MXGP klasse. Je moet 100 procent en op je best zijn anders doe je niet mee in deze competitieve klasse. Je wordt op ieder zwakpunt extra hard afgerekend in een klasse met zoveel talent.’’
Thomas Covington announces his retirement
The Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing team were excited to work with Thomas Covington after having him as part of the three rider MXGP line up for the 2020 season.
After a tough start to the season the American has announced that he will be retiring from the sport with immediate effect. The team respected these wishes and agreed to part ways due to mutual consent and would like to wish him all the best with his future.
Thomas Covington: I’ve decided that it was time to move on to something new. To stop racing is one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever made in my life because it’s all I’ve ever done for the last 20 years. With the way that everything was going, I just wasn’t really willing to take the risks that I used to take. I really worked my butt off training and doing as much testing that I could to be as prepared as possible for the next part of the season if there was going to be a season. I was going to give it everything I had and I still believed in myself and thought I could do it. However, when it came crunch time out on the track, I just couldn’t force myself to hold the gas in when I needed to and in that MXGP class and how it is now, you’ve got to be 100-percent on top of your game or you just get left behind because it is so competitive. Pretty much any weakness you have gets magnified so much more in a class with so much talent.
